HOLY LIGHT 🔥
In Jerusalem, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher held the Holy Light prayer vigil. This morning, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III, emerged from the tomb holding 33 candles lit with the Holy Light. He chanted "Come, receive the Light" and shared the news of Jesus Christ's Resurrection with people worldwide. The message spread through the recitation of the prayer "Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and on those in the tombs bestowing life!"

Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen! ☦️
After the crucifixion of Jesus, Mary Magdalene and other women went to prepare spices and myrrh to anoint his body, but rested on the Sabbath. On Sunday, they went to the tomb to anoint Jesus, but found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. They saw angels who told them Jesus had risen, and they went to tell the disciples. Jesus had been crucified on Friday, spent Saturday in the grave, and rose on Sunday. The celebration of this event is called Pascha, which means "passover," signifying freedom from sin and death. This day is also dedicated to the Lord in remembrance of the Resurrection, and the rest from labor formerly assigned to the Sabbath was transferred to this day.

On the day following the crucifixion of Jesus, the high priests and Pharisees gathered together and approached Pilate with a request to seal Jesus' tomb until the third day, fearing that His disciples would come by night to steal His body and proclaim His resurrection, as Jesus had foretold. They received Pilate's permission to seal the tomb and assigned guards to secure it. Today, as we remember the entombment of Jesus, we also celebrate His descent into Hades, where He broke down the gates of death and released all the captives of Hades, including our first parents and all the righteous who had passed away. This momentous event was greeted with praise and thanksgiving by the holy angels, as God restored humanity to its former glory.

HOLY FRIDAY ☦️
On Friday morning, Christ was sent from Caiaphas to Pontius Pilate, the Governor of Judea at the time. Pilate questioned him repeatedly and found him innocent, but ultimately sentenced him to death to appease the Jews. Christ was scourged and treated like a runaway slave before being handed over to soldiers, who stripped him, dressed him in a purple robe, crowned him with thorns, mocked him, spat on him, and struck him. He was then dressed in his own garments and led to Golgotha, where he was crucified between two thieves. One of the thieves repented and was promised a place in Paradise by Christ. He was blasphemed and mocked while on the cross and died at the ninth hour, saying "It is finished." Even the creation itself mourned the death of its Maker. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus took down Christ's body and buried it in a new tomb. These events are commemorated on this day and a fast is observed every Friday in remembrance of them, as commanded by the Apostles.

HOLY THURSDAY ☦️
On Holy Thursday, we commemorate Jesus' transformation of bread into his body and wine into his blood during the Last Supper, symbolising the gift of life we receive through Christ. It is essential to partake in his resurrected life.

Furthermore, Jesus demonstrated his authority through humility by washing his disciples' feet, showing his love for those who receive him. The events in the garden revealed Jesus' human nature and the impending sacrifice, expressing his emotions, sorrow, and desire to obey.

Finally, Judas' betrayal represented the ultimate sin against God, displaying a mix of joy and sorrow, life and death. In the icon, Christ stands at the center with John to his right, and Judas, taking the Eucharist, is situated further to the left.

HOLY WEDNESDAY ☦️
Two women anointed the Lord with myrrh. One did so long before His Passion, while the other did so a few days prior. One of these women was a harlot and a sinner, while the other was chaste and virtuous. The Church commemorates this act of reverence today, mentioning both the harlot's identity and Judas' betrayal. According to Matthew's account, both incidents occurred two days before Passover on a Wednesday.

During the anointing, the woman used precious myrrh to anoint Jesus' head and feet, wiping them with her hair. The disciples, particularly the covetous Judas, were scandalized by what they perceived as a wasteful use of the myrrh. They argued that it could be sold for a substantial sum of money and given to the poor. Jesus rebuked them and advised them not to criticize the woman. Outraged, Judas went to the high priests, who had already gathered in the court of Caiaphas to plan Jesus' downfall. Judas agreed to betray his teacher for thirty pieces of silver and began looking for an opportunity to carry out his plan from that moment onward (Matt. 26:14-16). As a result of the betrayal taking place on a Wednesday, it has been a tradition since Apostolic times to fast on Wednesdays throughout the year.

Today also occurs the Holy Mystery of Holy Unction that is offered for the healing of soul and body and for forgiveness of sins of the faithful.

This day involves the reading of the Gospel of Matthew, which includes Christ’s denunciation of the religious leaders of Israel. Additionally, two parables are commemorated. The Parable of the Ten Virgins stresses the importance of being prepared for the Day of Judgment, with five virgins being rewarded for being ready and five being disowned for not being prepared. The Parable of Talents is also read, reminding Orthodox people to use their God-given gifts in the service of God. The parable tells of a master who entrusts his property to three servants, rewarding those who make use of their talents but punishing the one who hides his talent.

HOLY MONDAY ☦️
Holy Monday marks the start of the holy Passion of our Saviour, where Joseph, who was the eleventh son of Jacob and the first son of Rachel, is presented as a prefiguring of Christ. Joseph was dearly loved by his father, which aroused envy in his brothers, leading them to throw him into a pit and sell him to foreigners for thirty pieces of silver. Joseph was then sold again in Egypt, where he was given much authority in governing his master's house because of his virtue. However, his master's wife tried to seduce him because of his fair countenance, but Joseph's chastity caused him to refuse her advances. She then falsely accused him, leading him to be imprisoned. Joseph was later released and became a king, reigning over all Egypt and providing wheat for the people. Joseph's experiences typify the betrayal, Passion, death, and glorification of our Lord Jesus Christ, as documented in Genesis, chapters 37, 39, and 41.

PALM SUNDAY 🌴
On Sunday, five days before the Passover of the Law, Jesus traveled from Bethany to Jerusalem. He sent two of his disciples to fetch a foal of an ass, which he rode on into the city. Upon hearing of Jesus' arrival, a crowd gathered and greeted him with palm branches, clothing, and cut branches from the trees, while shouting "Hosanna: Blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord, the King of Israel" (John 12:13). This celebration marks Jesus' radiant and glorious entry into Jerusalem. The palm branches represent Christ's triumph over death and the devil. Hosanna is a plea for salvation. Jesus riding on an untamed and unclean animal symbolizes the nations' former wildness and uncleanness, now subject to the holy Law of the Gospel.
